SM transformers is upgraded version of TRANSFORMER. it is very smaller than transformer. SM transformers used in the switched mode supplies(SMPS) which introduced in the 1980's.SMPS used in the computers and laptop adaptors. the advantage of SMPS is it will works very low voltage also. but normal line transformers lot of voltage variation in the DC supply.
Left side of SM transformer long distance between two pins shows it is primary winding. right side of two leads shows output of secondary winding.
TESTING OF SM TRANSFORMERS
Testing SM transformer turn your digital multimeter to 200 ohm,s range connect two leads to primarywinding of SM transformer, if you getting 5 to 1.5 ohm's then SM transformer primary winding OK.
if not showingg any readinng on digital multimeter then SM transformer OPEN. very rarely SM transformer may SHORT.
In these SM transformer two secondary windings one for primary section oscillator IC supply.
other one for DC 12V supply which is output.
Now testing method of secondary winding also same readig of multimeter around 3 to 1.5 ohm's that means SM trasformer is ok. if no reading on multi meter that means SM transformer damaged (open).
very rarely SM tranformer SHORT.
